Behind Bars Season 2 Episode 6: Armavir Prison, Armenia | Prison Documentary Behind Bars - Bogota, Colombia: 🤍 Once, inmates in Armenian prisons fell into the hands of the "Thieves in Law"- a criminal brotherhood rejecting state authority and living by its own code. They control the prison and control drug trade and smuggling. Nobody knows their leaders, but their power is immense. Armavir prison is the first attempt at limiting their influence by locking them into dedicated cell blocks to protect the other prisoners. Georg Avangyan is afraid. He's in trouble with the "Thieves in Law". Smuggled goods were found in his cell several times. This time, it was a kitchen knife. He's not afraid of the prison management, but of the brotherhood's power. The "Thieves in Law" expect more cell searches and send a signal to Georg's co-inmates: they are to teach the repeat offender a lesson. Panicking, Georg had himself voluntarily locked in a single cell. He may be imagining it all, though. His cell block was considered safe from the brotherhood. Arsen Artstruni prefers to avoid the criminal subculture. He has been in prison for over 20 years. He ordered a double murder as a terrorist in the 1990s and was sentenced to death for it. He didn't see the sun during the first 8 years. While his punishment was converted to life in prison, he has no idea if he will ever be released. He hasn't lost his will to live, though. Arsen is the first Armenian prisoner with a university degree in psychology. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe Free Documentary Channel for free: 🤍 Join the club and become a Free Documentary Patron: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #FreeDocumentary #Documentary #BehindBars ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Free Documentary is dedicated to bringing high-class documentaries to you on YouTube for free. Today, more Armenians live outside Armenia than within it. Many surviving families of the 1915 Armenian genocide found refuge in countries all over the world. But in recent years, Armenians have again had to flee conflict in places like Syria. Some are now returning to Armenia and spicing up its cuisine with flavors they acquired over generations away from their homeland. Armenian Dialects | Can They Understand Each Other?

28.11.2021

The Armenian language, being one of the most unique Indo-European languages, is known for its two standard forms, Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian. Eastern Armenian is spoken in the Republic of Armenia, as well as by the Armenian diaspora in countries such as Iran, Russia, Georgia, and other post-Soviet countries. Western Armenian, on the other hand, is primarily spoken by the Armenians in Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, the other parts of the Middle East, as well as South American countries. There are many different varieties, dialects, and accents in both standard forms. Every region in Armenia, and almost every village, has its own dialect. Also, among the diaspora, varieties and dialects have been created that are unique only to them, in which words from other languages (e.g. Persian, Turkish or Russian) are often found. This, of course, has its historical basis. In this video, several different dialects will be presented and discussed. Please contact me on Instagram if you would like to participate in a future video: 🤍 Teni: 🤍 Jessica: 🤍 Zack: 🤍 Antic: 🤍 Andre: 🤍 Armenia is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Despite the fact that throughout history it has been invaded and occupied by numerous different empires and foreign forces, and although Armenians have on different occasions adopted and implemented new beliefs and ideas into their culture, they have always managed to maintain and preserve their unique identity and language, from the time of the Kingdom of Urartu (also known as Kingdom of Van) going back to the 9th century BCE, to the time of the Orontid dynasty when most Armenians adopted Zoroastrianism, to the early part of the 4th century when Armenia became the first nation to officially adopt Christianity as a state religion. In the ensuing centuries, Armenia witnessed the invasion of numerous different empires, and ultimately in the 19th century, following the war between Iran and Russia, a significant part of historic Eastern Armenia which had been under Iranian control, was annexed by the Russian Empire as per the Treaty of Turkmenchay. While Eastern Armenia remained under Russian control, the historic Western Armenia was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. But as the WWI came to an end and both empires collapsed, parts of historical Armenia gained independence and by 1918 the First Republic of Armenia was established. In the years that followed, after several wars and conflicts, the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic (also known as Soviet Armenia) was established as part of the Soviet Union and remained as such until the 1990s. In the summer of 1990, Armenia declared its independence from the Soviet Union which was confirmed a year later by a referendum, and as the Soviet Union collapsed, the independence of Armenia as sovereign nation became widely recognized. In the post-Soviet era, Armenia has been very successful in linguistic de-Russification and today Armenian (հայերէն / հայերեն) continues to be written in its own writing system, the Armenian alphabet, which was introduced by Mesrop Mashtots in the 5th century. The most widespread Armenian dialect today is the Yerevan dialect (Երևանի բարբառ), an Eastern Armenian dialect composed primarily of Classical Armenian (Grabar) words, with some influence from other languages such as Russian and Persian. Other Eastern dialects include the ancient Artsakh dialect, also referred to as the Karabakh dialect, Parskahayeren, which is spoken by Iranian Armenians, as well as many dialects within Armenia, and several others which are no longer spoken. Western Armenian, which is based mainly on the Istanbul Armenian dialect, also has many subdialects and accents. Historically, there were many different Western Armenian dialects which are now extinct. The dialects which have survived include, among others, Homshetsi (Հոմշեցի / Hemşince), which is spoken by the Hemshin people in northeastern Turkey, Abkhazia, Russia, and Central Asia; the dialects spoken in Syria and Lebanon, such as those in Kessab (كسب), Latakia (اللاذقية), Jisr al-Shughur (جسر الشغور), and Anjar (عنجر); the dialects spoken by the Armenians in Istanbul and Vakıflı (Վաքըֆ), the only remaining Armenian village in Turkey, the Mush dialect (Մշոյ բարբառ) which used to be spoken in the city of Muş in present-day eastern Turkey, but today it is nearly extinct and its remaining few native speakers are scattered in villages in Armenia and three Armenian-populated villages in the Samtskhe-Javakheti province of Georgia, the Karin dialect, which used to be primarily spoken in the city of Erzurum in present-day eastern Turkey, but nowadays, it is mainly spoken in northwestern Armenia, in places such as Gyumri, Artik, Akhuryan, and Aghin.

Rosa Linn will represent Armenia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin with the song 'Snap'. 🎶 Snapping 1 2 - where are you?' 🎶 Rosa says: “I think we’ve all been at a snapping point, where it felt like there’s no way out and that the entire world is just crumbling down around you. You start questioning everything, including yourself. I have been there. And what I realized was that I had the strength to shape my reality – it just took getting out of my own way and finding inner-peace. It’s all about self-love and accepting that you are enough. Writing “Snap” was a form of therapy for me and I hope that it can be that for others who are also going through hard times." And where it leaves war-torn Nagorno-Karabakh. Subscribe to our channel! 🤍 Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous area in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia. For more than 30 years, it's been locked in a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The fight between the two countries began in the early 20th century but became a frozen conflict for 60 years while the whole region was under the control of the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union fell, newfound independence sparked a brutal six-year war in the region, where Armenia emerged victorious. From 1994 to 2020, Armenia controlled Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan rebuilt its military. Fighting erupted again in summer 2020, and Azerbaijan went on the offensive — eventually capturing most of Nagorno-Karabakh and dramatically reshaping the region. Lebanese ARMENIAN FOOD TOUR of Little Armenia in Beirut, Lebanon!!

🧳ARMANDO: 🤍 🌎 MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG: 🤍 My adventures in Lebanon continued in the national capital, Beirut, where I went on an epic tour of the Little Armenia neighborhood. Join me and my guide Armando as we explore this unique area of the city! Little Armenia is home to Beirut’s sizeable Armenian community. Armando is half-Armenian and half-Brazilian, so he was the perfect person to show me around! 👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: 🤍 Lebanon was a French colony until 1945, so a lot of the people speak French. We started off with some Lebanese coffee for less than $1 USD before stopping by a kebab shop. The guy inside was making a salad, and they had some spices there as well. We also passed lots of jewelry shops on our way to get some sujuk shawarma. They sold gold necklaces, bracelets, rings, and more. At Basterma Bedo, we saw the cooks slicing chicken and lamb shawarma off the the giant stacked meat. But we were headed to Basterma Mano, a more famous shop! It’s said that they have the best shawarma in the city. They have beef, chicken, and lamb shawarma, and they only cost $2.50 USD! First, the add pickle and tomato, and then they add the sujuk shawarma, and add either garlic sauce or mayo before toasting it in the panini press. The guy even cut some meat off for me. It was really juicy but only mid-level spicy! The sandwich was crispy with a nice burst of juiciness from the tomatoes. I loved the spicy beef sausage. It was so filling and tasty and took me straight back to my time in Armenia! It was even better when the cook come and added some creamy garlic sauce! Then, we saw them make some roast beef sandwiches with lettuce, pickle, tomatoes, and more. I got to see them smoking the sujuk and basturma. From there, we headed through the main square in the area, where we found an open-air cafe where they offer shisha and juices. Shisha is traditional in the Middle East. We also got some freshly pressed carrot juice. Both cost us less than $6 USD. Then, at Basterma Bedo, we watched them make basturma sandwiches out of the peppery beef and vegetables on a baguette. The beef was really peppery! The dried, aged, peppery beef was unbelievable. I loved the toasted baguette, pickle, and tomato as well. It was really nice and full of flavor! Where have you been? Armenian genocide: survivors recall events 100 years on

24.12.2015

In 1915 a million people were brought through what is now Turkey and walked to their deaths near Deir-al-Zour in modern Syria. One hundred years on, only a handful of survivors remain to tell the stories of the Armenian genocide, which they witnessed. by Diana Markosian A hundred years after the Armenian genocide, filmmaker Diana Markosian found two survivors who witnessed deportation, death, and denial of the events of 1915. Together they journeyed back to the past. I was never interested in pursuing work on the Armenian genocide. When I started this project, it was still just a vague historical narrative. I knew that, in 1915, the Ottomans initiated a policy of deportation and mass murder to destroy their Armenian population. And that, by the First World War’s end, more than a million people were eliminated from what is now modern-day Turkey. But I had no idea of the personal toll the genocide exacted on my own family, or the sense of connection I would slowly come to feel through making this piece. I am Armenian, but I was born in Moscow and raised in America. For most of my life, I struggled with my Armenian identity, partly because of the history one inherits. It is something I understood but never fully embraced. Then a year ago, I happened to be in Armenia when a foundation approached me, requesting help in finding the remaining genocide survivors. I pursued voter registrations online to see who was born before 1915, and then traveled cross-country to find them. That’s how I met Movses and Yepraksia — who lived past their hundredth year. When I met them, they shared with me memories of their early homes. Movses was born in the village of Kebusie in Musa Dagh Mountain not far from the Syrian border. Yepraksia lived in a small village near Kars on the Armenian border. They hadn’t seen their home since escaping a century ago. I wanted in some way reunite each of the survivors with their homeland. I decided to travel back Turkey to re-trace their last memories. When I told the survivors I would be visiting their native land, each one asked me to fulfill a wish. Movses, from Musa Dagh, drew a map of his village, and asked me to find his church and leave his portrait on the footsteps of what are now ruins. He hadn’t seen his home in 98 years. In his village, I found everything he had described to me: the sheep, the fruit he remembered eating, and the sea. I even found the ruins of what was once his church. Yepraksia, from a small village in Kars, asked me to help her find her older brother who she separated from after 1915. Once I returned to Armenia, I created billboard-sized images of the survivors’ homelands as a way of bridging the past and present. All these years later, upon delivering the image, the survivors grabbed on, as if by holding the image close they would be taken back to a place they called home many years ago. This is a story of home — everything they had, everything they lost. And what they have found again. Why the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict is flaring up again | DW News

Fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan flared up again on Monday night, with both sides reporting intense artillery shelling. At around midnight, Azerbaijani forces shelled Armenian troops at three locations along the border. Azerbaijan said it was responding to a buildup of Armenian landmines and weapons near the border. Armenia fired back in retaliation. The fighting took place near the Nagorno-Karabakh region, an area within Azerbaijan where ethnic Armenian separatists declared a breakaway republic — later known as Artsakh — in 1991. At a press briefing early on Tuesday, Armenian defense spokesperson Aram Torosyan said the situation remains "extremely tense" as fighting continues. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan later told parliament that "For the moment, we have 49 [troops] killed and unfortunately it's not the final figure." Armenia, Azerbaijan trade blame for violence Both countries claimed to have launched proportionate responses against what they saw as provocations from the other side. "At 00:05 a.m. [local time] on Tuesday, Azerbaijan launched intensive shelling, with artillery and large-caliber firearms, against Armenian military positions in the direction of the cities of Goris, Sotk, and Jermuk," Armenia's defense ministry said. However, Azerbaijan accused Armenian forces of carrying out "large-scale subversive acts" earlier on Monday night near the border districts of Dashkesan, Kelbajar and Lachin by placing landmines and mobilizing weapons. "The countermeasures taken by the Azerbaijani military in response to the provocation by the Armenian military are local and directed against legitimate military objects that serve as firing points," Azerbaijan's defense ministry added. Armenian forces said they subsequently launched a "proportionate" response. The Azerbaijani defense ministry said its troops came under "intense shelling from weapons of various caliber, including mortars, by units of the Armenian army." Both sides acknowledged troop casualties but did not confirm numbers. Long-running feud over Nagorno-Karabakh The ethnically Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh was the site of two wars between Azerbaijan and Armenia in recent decades. The territory was controlled by Armenian separatists for almost 30 years until Azerbaijan regained control of most of the territory after a six-week war in 2020 and a ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia. Last week, Armenia accused Azerbaijan of killing one of its soldiers in a border shootout, while Azerbaijan has also accused Armenia of firing at its troops in recent months. Unforgettable ARMENIAN FOOD Experience + Smoking Fish the Traditional Way! | Etchmiadzin, Armenia

My third day in Armenia continued with more exploration of the holy city of Etchmiadzin! Come along with me as I have an unforgettable Armenian food experience and have some traditional smoked fish in Etchmiadzin, Armenia! Lusine: 🤍 Armenia Travel: 🤍 We began at the Machanents Cultural Center, a museum that contains lots of artifacts like a medieval clay pipe that people used to transport cow milk to the village. There was pottery from the 12th and 13th centuries, as well as Bronze Age pottery from the 2nd century BC. There was also a water jar that women carried to the closest water source to bring back water to their families. In the back of the museum was a woman weaving wool carpets. Carpet weaving in Armenia dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries BC! The weaving style here uses the double knot technique. The cultural center reminded me of a farmhouse. They also have food and hold master classes. It’s a cultural school where kids come to study. Then, we went to lunch. I started with some cheese and the Greek-like salad and rolled it up in the lavash. It was so fresh, tasty, and healthy. I really loved the cheese containing red pepper. The lavash was unbelievable! Next was a crumbly cheese in the lavash, which was strong but delicious. Then, ten more dishes I had never seen before arrived! I had to start with the roasted eggplant with beef, cheese, and cream, which blew me away. The lentils were nice and dense, and the fried lavash was similar to fried wontons. Next was a buttery veal stew with soft, delicious roasted vegetables! The bulgur wheat with onions was my least favorite. Then, I went for eggplant cooked with brandy, which was unreal! Then, I added a creamy garlic sauce called matsoun on the lentils. Then, it was time for our master class. We’d get to see fish cooked in a really unique way! They added the pieces of salted, raw trout to a glass pan with walnuts. They then put the pan in a contraption that catches the sunlight, which cooks the fish! They move and rotate the dish to catch the light from the sun. It gets to 700 degrees Celsius inside the dish. While it cooked, I climbed a tree and got some apricots from it. The apricot was so tasty and juicy and not too ripe, but I tried a better, riper one just before the fish finished cooking. The trout had a smoky walnut flavor! It’s also cooked in no oil or butter. It was so delicious! I loved the skin, eyes, and head of the fish! The Machanents Cultural Center also has a bed & breakfast with 12 unique rooms. There’s also a tavern where they keep and age wine and have poems about wine in different languages. They age the wine underneath the glass tabletops. It was beautiful and felt like an old-school tavern. There are also wines for different people and some of the bottles had been warped because they were cooked in an oven. The wines are from lots of different countries. Next, we went to the Song of the Old Days Room, which was made for grandparents to work in. It was really incredible. Then, we headed back to Yerevan, and visited a park near my hotel that celebrates the 2,800th anniversary of Yerevan with 2,800 water jets in a fountain. There’s a tunnel of water streams that collapses without warning. I ran through! It was really cool and refreshing! What an epic day with an unforgettable Armenian food and cultural experience at the Machanents Cultural Center in Etchmiadzin, Armenia! I highly suggest everyone visit and stay there. I hope you enjoyed coming along on my Armenian food experience in Etchmiadzin, Armenia! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave a comment.
