Russia's RIA Novosti news agency published on Tuesday (November 29) a video showing interiors of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine's Enerhodar, including a control room and turbine hall. Reports in Russian media, citing Enerhodar city administration, said nuclear plant's staff were currently in process of getting new labour contracts, Russian passports, and bank cards for receiving their salaries wages. In the RIA Novosti video, a man identified as an official from Russia's Rosenergoatom says all staff at the nuclear power plant possessed the know how to safely operate the reactors. "We can see perfectly well that they are calm, self-confident, and have enough knowledge and skills to ensure nuclear and technological safety and security of Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant," said Rosenergoatom's Dmitry Shevchenko. The International Atomic Energy Agency and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have called for the establishment of a demilitarized zone around the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. Europe's largest nuclear plant has been disconnected from the Ukrainian electricity grid after shelling cut its external power lines. Moscow and Kyiv accuse each other of shelling the plant and risking a nuclear disaster. Nuclear safety expert Charles Casto told DW that "we must prepare for any eventuality that could happen" in Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine says its forces have reclaimed around 2,000 square kilometres of territory this month. Operations at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia power plant in Ukraine have been stopped. City of Kupiansk is a railway hub while Izium is a major base for Russian forces in Kharkiv region. By retaking city of Kupiansk in Kharkiv region Ukraine is cutting off Russian supply routes. Energoatom, the state agency in charge of the plant, said on Sunday that work at the facility was “completely stopped” after it disconnected the Number 6 power unit from the grid at 3:41am (00:41 GMT). Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has warned of a very real risk of nuclear disaster. After weeks of trying, he has led a team to the plant where Ukrainian staff have worked in highly challenging conditions for almost six months. Russia seized the Zaporizhzhia plant on the left bank of the River Dnieper at the start of its war and the two sides have since accused each other of repeatedly shelling it. When the plant was temporarily cut off from Ukraine's power grid for the first time in its history in late August, Ukraine's president said the world had narrowly avoided a radiation accident. Russian officials have even produced a map of how a radioactive cloud might spread to neighbouring countries. What, then, is the risk to this nuclear plant which houses six reactors - and is Europe facing a Fukushima-type meltdown? Much of the anxiety has been about the plant coming under fire from artillery shells or rockets. Ukraine has accused Russian forces of using it as a shield from which to fire on nearby cities. Russia denies that is the case, but satellite photos have shown their military stationed near some of the buildings. "Zaporizhzhia was built in the 1980s, which is relatively modern," says Mark Wenman, head of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Nuclear Energy Futures. "It has a solid containment building. It's 1.75m [5.75ft] thick, of heavily reinforced concrete on a seismic bed [to withstand earthquakes]... and it takes a hell of a lot to breach that."

Ukraine's state nuclear company Enerrgoatom said all six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant remain disconnected from the country's electrical grid. The plant is still disconnected after fires caused by shelling nearby meant the plant went offline. Energoatom said there were currently no issues with the plant's machinery or its safety systems. Work is continuing to restore Zaporizhzhia's connection to the grid. The regional governor of Zaporizhzhia, Oleksandr Starukh, later said two of the reactors at the plant had resumed operations. In televised remarks, Starukh said the fifth reactor at the plant is in the process of resuming operations while the sixth reactor is currently working at 10% capacity. Prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Zaporizhzhia supplied roughly one-fifth of Ukraine's electricity. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. In March, Russian forces occupied the plant, though Ukrainian engineers from Enerrgoatom remain responsible for the plant's day-to-day operations under exceedingly difficult circumstances. The plant has been repeatedly hit with shells in the last two weeks. Kyiv and Moscow point the finger at the other side for the shelling. The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for the demilitarization of Zaporizhzhia. A Russian barrage pounded apartment buildings and other targets in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 17 people and wounding dozens, officials said Sunday. The blasts in the city, which sits in a region Moscow has claimed as its own, blew out windows in adjacent buildings and left at least one high-rise apartment building partially collapsed. The strike came after an explosion Saturday caused the partial collapse of a bridge linking the Crimean Peninsula with Russia, damaging an important supply artery for the Kremlin's faltering war effort in southern Ukraine and hitting a towering symbol of Russian power in the region. City council Secretary Anatoliy Kurtev said rockets struck Zaporizhzhia overnight, and that at least five private houses were destroyed and around 40 were damaged. Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Plant Damaged by Powerful Explosions: IAEA

00:00:23
21.11.2022

Powerful explosions shook the area around Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant over the past day, causing damage at the site, the United Nations atomic agency said. Damage was seen at several buildings and equipment, though none so far has been critical to nuclear safety and security, the International Atomic Energy Agency said on its website, citing plant management. More than a dozen blasts were heard within a short period on Sunday morning. Members of the agency’s monitoring team, on-site at Zaporizhzhia since September, could also see some of the explosions from their windows, the IAEA said. Russia and Ukraine have traded blame for sporadic shelling in the vicinity of Europe’s largest atomic plant for months, and did so again on Sunday. “The news from our team yesterday and this morning is extremely disturbing,” said IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi. “Whoever is behind this, it must stop immediately.” Russia’s army issued a statement blaming Ukraine for the shelling, saying Kyiv “does not stop its provocations aiming at creating the threat of a man-made catastrophe.” It said radiation levels remain normal. Energoatom, Ukraine’s nuclear regulator, said on Telegram that Russian forces had struck the facility, causing damage to connection overpasses, chemical desalinated water storage tanks and the steam generator purge system, among other things. The damage comes as Ukraine struggles to keep the lights on for millions of people after weeks of Russian missile and drone attacks on power facilities across the country. “The Russians targeted and disabled the very infrastructure needed to launch 5th and 6th power units and to restore electricity production for the Ukrainian grid,” Energoatom said. The power plant has been controlled by Russia since shortly after Moscow’s Feb. 24 invasion, but continues to be operated by Ukrainian personnel. Russian President Vladimir Putin in September declared the plant part of Russia, amid a broader annexation of the Zaporizhzhia region. The IAEA has urged Ukraine and Russia to agree to a safety and security zone around Zaporizhzhia, without success. Artillery fire and shelling in the vicinity has repeatedly disconnected the facility from the electrical grid, posing a safety risk. Andrea Mitchell is joined by Ivo Daalder, former U.S. ambassador to NATO, and Joseph Cirincione, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, to discuss the risks of disaster at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, where just one of the station's six reactors is operating, raising concerns about a potential meltdown.  "The risks are high. It's extraordinarily dangerous. We're hanging by a thread," says Cirincione. » Subscribe to MSNBC: 🤍 Follow the MSNBC Midterms Elections guide to the important races across the United States as Americans prepare to cast their votes. Ukrainians, including in the capital, Kyiv, are being told to avoid using electricity for several hours a day to conserve supplies. But it is cities near the front line like Zaporizhzhia, which are relentlessly targeted by Moscow. One of the worst attacks came last week, ripping through a block of flats in a suburb on the outskirts of the city, on Zestafonska street. We report from block number 8 on what happened to those who lived there - and those who survived. (Subscribe: 🤍 - Follow us on Instagram - 🤍

More than a dozen powerful explosions have been recorded near a Russian-occupied nuclear power plant in south Ukraine since Saturday evening. The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, made an urgent appeal for a stop to the fighting at the Zaporizhzhia plant, which is Europe's biggest. "Whoever is behind this, it must stop immediately," he said. "You're playing with fire!" The plant stands on the River Dnipro, on the front line in the war.
