Solaris is a 2002 science fiction film directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney. It is based on the science fiction novel by Polish writer Stanisław Lem, which also inspired the critically acclaimed 1972 Soviet film of the same name, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, and a 1968 TV film. Chris Kelvin is played by George Clooney, and Rheya by Natascha McElhone. Borrowing heavily from the Tarkovsky film, this version of Solaris is a meditative psychodrama set almost entirely on a space station orbiting Solaris, adding flashbacks to the previous experiences of its main characters on Earth. Chris struggles with the questions of Solaris' motivation, his beliefs and memories, and reconciling what was lost with an opportunity for a second chance. Solaris is a 2002 science fiction-psychological drama written and directed by Steven Soderbergh. Starring George Clooney and Natascha McElhone. Steven Soderbergh's Solaris is a second adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's SF classic, sadly largely dismissed and ignored as an inferior and "shallow Hollywood" remake of Andrei Tarkovsky's 1972 adaptation. In my opinion, both adaptations are superior to the novel (interesting that Lem disliked both adaptations), and each adaptation comes with its own unique strengths and insights into human nature. Definitely an excellent and valuable movie experience not to be missed, together with Tarkovsky's version. The majority of the movie takes place on a space station orbiting a sentient planet, which manifests/communicates by materializing individuals from the minds of the space station crew. After the company financing the project losses contact with the space station, they persuade Dr. Chris Kelvin (played by George Clooney) to travel to Solaris, because stationed there happens to be his scientist friend Dr. Gibarian. Dr. Gibarian also sent a distressing message inviting him to come, which is shown to Kelvin by the company people. Finally, previous attempts to retrieve the crew failed. After arriving on the station Kelvin finds Dr. Gibarian dead and soon learns the nature of Solaris when Solaris materializes his dead wife Rheya. What follows are deep psychological struggles of dealing with such replicas of loved ones, as well as attempts to illuminate Solaris intentions. In this specific scene Kelvin is visited by a replica of Gibarian (or he just dreams of it), who begins the dialogue with a disturbingly commanding voice of maybe Solaris itself, giving an eerie atmosphere to the conversation. I love how this scene is written leaving the viewer in doubt about the whole reality of the event, as well as of the participants, in the same time providing important plot information. In the second half of the conversation Gibarian is the sound of reason, arguing on the futility of communication with Solaris, imploring Kelvin to leave, while Kelvin caves to emotions, and persists in staying and finding a solution to events one single human can't possibly deal with. Van alle kunsten stond film het dichtst bij de wetmatigheden van het menselijk denken en leven, stelde Tarkovski – en daarom was cinema de meest waarheidsgetrouwe kunstvorm. De vorm van Tarkovski’s films werd bepaald door extreem lang aangehouden shots, een langzaam bewegende camera, bijzonder gebruik van geluid en muziek en van kleur verschietende filmbeelden. De tentoonstelling is gedacht vanuit de idee om zo dicht mogelijk bij Tarkovski en zijn oeuvre te komen. Er is voor gekozen om de bezoeker onder te dompelen in Tarkovski’s beeldwereld, om de kijker als het ware te bedwelmen door de vele precies gekozen filmfragmenten. De aanpak volgt Tarkovski’s ideeën over de kracht van ‘de poëzie van het beeld’ en de noodzaak van een ‘poëtische logica’ en een ‘poëtische montage’. Bijzonder zijn de – nooit eerder in Nederland getoonde - Polaroids en foto’s die Tarkovski maakte in zijn privéleven en tijdens draaiperioden. Daarnaast is niet eerder getoond materiaal te zien uit Tarkovski’s privé-archief, waaronder brieven, scenario’s en documenten. De herinneringen aan Tarkovski’s persoonlijke en beroepsmatige leven worden ter beschikking gesteld door Tarkovski’s zoon Andrej Andrejevitsj Tarkovski. In het zaalprogramma is het volledige oeuvre van Tarkovski te zien, met grotendeels nieuwe digitale restauraties, waaronder De spiegel, Solaris en Tarkovski’s laatste film, Het offer (1986). Ook zijn er films te zien van makers die Tarkovski hebben geïnspireerd zoals Sergej Paradzjanov en Robert Bresson, of van regisseurs die zich door Tarkovski hebben laten inspireren, onder wie Lars von Trier en Alex Garland. De uma maneira ou de outra, Solaris sempre foi, e sempre será, uma obra sobre a humanidade e não sobre se perder na ficção científica, embora a questão do cientificismo seja um ponto importante. O diretor Tarkvosky se distanciou do livro, mas quis se distanciar ainda mais de "2001: Uma Odisseia no Espaço" do Kubrick e encontrou um vasto campo para poder fazer isso. Inclusive, o Tarkovsky detestava o filme "2001" e o Kubrick acabou retribuindo o favor quanto a "Solaris". Falar sobre o filme soviético, é falar sobre um aprofundamento psicológico no eu, é falar sobre inconsciente, é falar sobre as bases de contato extraterrestre e sobre como uma sociedade avançada não precisa ser demonstrada de maneira utópica.
