Lohengrin is a romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan tradition. The opera has proved inspirational towards other works of art. Among those deeply moved by the fairy-tale opera was the young King Ludwig II of Bavaria. 'Der Märchenkönig' ('The Fairy-tale King') as he was dubbed later built his ideal fairy-tale castle and dubbed it "New Swan Stone," or "Neuschwanstein", after the Swan Knight. It was King Ludwig's patronage that later gave Wagner the means and opportunity to compose, build a theatre for, and stage his epic cycle, the Ring of the Nibelung. The most popular and recognizable part of the opera is the Bridal Chorus, better known as "Here Comes the Bride", often played as a processional at weddings in the West. The first production of Lohengrin was in Weimar, Germany on 28 August 1850 at the Staatskapelle Weimar under the direction of Franz Liszt, a close friend and early supporter of Wagner. It is the son of the Parsifal Opera: a collected and contemplative atmosphere. Lohengrin is in the filiation of Weber's operas, giving a large place to the great periods of singing, to the plasticity of singing, but begins to unfold the orchestral fabric, with an increase in woodwinds and the assumptions of a space in which a symphonic colour, peculiar to Wagner, will gradually develop. The Prelude, with its almost motionless dynamics and bewitching stretching of the sound is the initial image. Rudolf Kempe conducts with an incredible transparency of the orchestra, a softness of tone and a kind of warm tenderness. Throughout this magnificent Lohengrin, Rudolf Kempe gives the orchestra impulses, caressing or dramatic, violent even and finally soothed, shaping the choirs with the same science of balance and brightness, light and dark. The stage is moreover one of the most beautiful one could have dreamed of: Jess Thomas, a voice with silvery reflections, is a Lohengrin with a clear and radiant timbre and a fiery voice; Elisabeth Grümmer is the ideal Elsa, at once pure and intensely touching, tortured and terribly human in her fragility; the evil couple, Ortrud-Telramund, consists of Christa Ludwig and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who, to the vocal discipline of the Lied, combine an impressive dramatic temperament, Christa Ludwig in particular, truly terrible in this dark role; and Gottlob Frick, a Wagnerian voice as one dreams of finding again, is a King before whom one bows. Noble and fiery, this Lohengrin is one of the monuments of Wagnerian recording history! Richard Wagner PLAYLIST (reference recordings) : 🤍

An operatic dream came true in May 2016, when two singers made their role debuts as Lohengrin and Elsa at the Dresden State Opera! Previously at home in French and Italian lyric tenor roles, Piotr Beczala was expanding his repertory in a direction that many opera fans had long wanted him to explore, while Anna Netrebko – previously hailed as the “queen of bel canto” – was undertaking her first Wagnerian role. It was also her first foray into the lyric-dramatic repertory. Both singers had been persuaded to take on their new roles by the Dresden Staatskapelle’s principal conductor, Christian Thielemann, one of the leading Wagner conductors of our day.

Take a look behind the scenes of The Royal Opera's new production of Wagner's great Romantic opera. Find out more at 🤍 Lohengrin was the first fruit of Wagner’s fascination with the Holy Grail myths of Arthurian legend, the end point of which would be his final masterpiece Parsifal. Written between Tannhäuser and the first operas of the Ring cycle, Lohengrin marks a turning point as Wagner moves from conventional operatic form to the music dramas of his mature style. The two forms combine in Lohengrin to create a work of fervent music imagination and great dramatic power. David Alden directs a new production of this masterpiece from Wagner’s early maturity, The Royal Opera’s first since 1977. Alden sets his production of Lohengrin in a bombed-out city, and depicts a chaotic, war-torn and politically divided society in which the people crave a strong leader and a sense of purpose.
Lohengrin emerged here as a work of revolutionary freshness. It did so by paying full attention to the score’s rich details, exchanging the usual Wagnerian default setting of loud and louder still for a bel canto interpretation shot through with spine-tingling dynamic contrasts and expressive subtlety. Anna Netrebko thought she would have to sing with full voice and more to make it through Lohengrin. “That’s what I expected with Wagner,” she recalls. “At first I sang everything quite loud. I thought: ‘It’s Wagner – it has to be loud!’ But when I came to rehearse, Maestro Thielemann had the orchestra play so softly I could hear almost nothing and could sing even quieter than I would in, say, Bellini or Donizetti.” Sächsischer Staatsopernchor , Staatskapelle Dresden May 2016 Anna Netrebko - Wagner: Lohengrin, Treulich geführt ziehet dahin Explore the diversity of classical music: 🤍 Subscribe here – The Best Of Classical Music: 🤍 _ Find Deutsche Grammophon Online Homepage: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Newsletter: 🤍 _ 最高のクラシック音楽―登録はこちら: 🤍 最优质古典音乐 – 此处订阅: 🤍 Лучшая Классическая Музыка - Подписаться: 🤍 La mejor música clásica - Suscríbase aquí: 🤍 Le meilleur de la musique classique.
